On this, The Day of Presidents, I would be remiss if I didn’t drudge up that classic list of eerie coincidences between the lives of our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, and his nephew, George Washington:

Lincoln: Born in February.
Washington: ALSO born in February.

Lincoln: Fought to free the slaves.
Washington: High School Nickname was “Slaves McGee.” Later legally changed name to “Slaves McGee.”

Lincoln: Died in 1865.
Washington: Graduated High School in 1965.

Lincoln: Delivered the Gettysburg Address.
Washington: Born without ears.

Lincoln: Vice president was Hannibal Hamlin
Washington: Vice president was a cardboard cutout of Hannibal Hamlin.

Lincoln: Famously lived in a log cabin.
Washington: Famously had sex with every member of Alexander Hamilton’s family.

Lincoln: Face in Mount Rushmore.
Washington: Face ALSO in Mount Rushmore.

Lincoln: Responsible for the 13th amendment.
Washington: Largely responsible for climate change*

George Washington was a general in the Revolutionary war, which was in the late 1700’s. I look up to him for his tenacity and leadership during his stay with his army at Valley Forge. They were starving, dirty, and stripped of hope, but through his and his officers’ leadership, they pulled through. Also, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation more to keep foreign powers from the Civil War than abolish slavery, although he was an abolitionist.
